Story: Based on the play by Michel Marc Bouchard. 1952:
Bishop Bilodeau visits a québécois prison to hear the last confession of boyhood friend
Simon Doucet jailed for murder 40 years ago. The inmates force Bilodeau to watch gay love
scenes from the play The Death of San Sebastian depicting what really happened in 1912.
In their village of Roberval in northern Québec we meet Bilodeau as a young man,
intent on convincing Simon to join the seminary with him. They rehearse for a school play
with Vallier de Tilly, the son of an impoverished and eccentric countess. Simon stars
as Saint Sebastian. Valier is in love with Simon and he is drawn to Vallier, but in fear
of his father's wrath for kissing Vallier during drama rehearsal, Simon courts a visiting
Parisian, asking her to marry him. Vallier, encouraged by his mother, attends the
engagement party to declare his love for Simon. Bilodeau is yealous.
After 40 years Simon finally finds out the truth he has sought desperately.
Verhaal: Gebaseerd op het toneelstuk van Michel
Marc Bouchard. Het is 1952: Bisschop Bilodeau bezoekt een gevangenis in Quebec om de
laatste biecht van zijn jeugdvriend Simon Doucet te horen, die 40 jaar geleden veroordeeld
is wegens moord. De medegevangenen dwingen Bilodeau naar homoseksuele liefdesscenes uit
het toneelstuk "De dood van Sint Sebastiaan" te kijken die beschrijven wat er zich
werkelijk in 1912 afspeelde.
In hun woonplaats Roberval in het noorden van Quebec ontmoetten we Bilodeau als
jongeman die probeert Simon zo ver te krijgen dat hij met hem mee het seminarie in gaat.
Ze repeteren voor een toneelstuk op school met Vallier de Tilly, de zoon van een
verarmde en excentrieke gravin. Simon speelt Sint Sebastiaan. Vallier is verliefd op Simon
en Simon voelt zich aangetrokken tot hem, maar uit angst voor zijn vader's woede over
de kus die hij Valier gaf tijdens de repetities, gaat Simon met een gaste uit Parijs om
en vraagt haar ten huwelijk. Vallier gaat, bemoedigd door zijn moeder, naar het
verlovingsfeest om Simon zijn liefde te verkondigen. Bilodeau is jaloers.
Na 40 jaar vindt Simon eindelijk de waarheid waar hij zo wanhopig naar op zoek was
geweest.
