Story: TV series, based on the book of the same name by Armistead Maupin. This
first series revolves around the residents of 28 Barbary Lane, a old apartment house
in the heart of San Francisco. The spiritual center of the story is Anna Madrigal,
the landlady who has a mysterious secret. She lovingly tends her garden filled with
marijuana plants and looks after her tenants with maternal affection. The tenants are
all young, single and searching for love and happiness. Mary Ann Singleton is the
newcomer, a fresh-faced girl from the Midwest, eager to embrace all that San Francisco
has to offer. Mona Ramsey is the resident free spirit and a copywriter in an ad agency,
with a mystical connection to Barbary Lane. She is on a downward spiral until her
lovelorn friend Michael "Mouse" Tolliver turns up. He's just broken up with his boyfriend
and is looking for comfort and a place to stay. Brian Hawkins is a civil rights lawyer
turned waiter, who devotedly pumps iron and picks up girls in a city where the odds are
stacked in his favour. Then the sleazy Norman Neal Williams moves in with a secret agenda
tied to Mrs Madrigal's mysterious past.

Verhaal: TV serie, gebaseerd op het boek met de zelfde naam van Armistead Maupin.
Deze eerste serie speelt zich af rond de bewoners van 28 Barbary Lane, een oud apartementenhuis
in het hart van San Francisco. Het spirituele centrum van verhaal is Anna Madrigal, de
hospita met een mysterieus geheim. Ze verzorgt vol liefde haar tuin, die gevuld is met
marihuanaplanten, en zorgt voor haar huurders met moederlijke gevoelens. De huurders zijn
allen jong, alleenstaand en op zoek naar liefde en geluk. Mary Ann Singleton is de
nieuwkomer, een levenslustig meisje uit het Midwesten van Amerika, die begerig afwacht
wat San Francisco haar allemaal te bieden heeft. Mona Ramsey is de inwonende vrije geest en
een copywriter in een advertentiebureau, met een mystieke verbinding met Barbary Lane.
Haar leven maakt een neergaande beweging tot haar door liefdesverdriet overmande vriend
Michael "Mouse" Tolliver op komt dagen. Hij heeft het net uitgemaakt met zijn vriend en
is op zoek naar troost en een plaats om te verblijven. Brian Hawkins is een ober die burgerrecht-
advocaat is geworden, hij werkt aan zijn spieren en pikt meisjes op in de stad. Dan trekt
de armoedig-uitziende Norman Neal Williams in met een verborgen agenda die te maken heeft
met het mysterieuze verleden van Mrs. Madrigal.
