Story: 1961: When Abby dies of a stroke, her surviving partner of 50 years, Edith, must silently face heartbreak and the denial of her status as "family" by the hospital and Abby's heirs.
1972: Linda, a feminist, out, college student is ousted, along with her lesbian cohorts, from the on-campus womens' group: the cause of feminism comes first, apparently. In an attempt to forget their troubles, the friends go to the only lesbian bar in town, where Linda meets Amy, who is too butch to pass muster with Linda's friends. Intrigued, despite her friends' disapproval, Linda comes to understand and fall in love with Amy while learning about her own prejudices.
2000: Fran and Kal want to have a baby. But they want the baby to be theirs and theirs alone, so they go to the sperm bank. But the decisions to be made! Ordering over the internet? Which donor? What race? What gender? And what if the sperm bank is out of that particular perfect donor? And above all, is it right to bring a baby into a world that will undoubtedly be prejudiced? Or will love and laughter see them through?
Verhaal 1961: Als Abby aan een beroerte overlijdt, moet haar partner Edith, die vijftig jaar met haar samen is geweest, in stilte haar verlies beleven en wordt ze niet gezien als familie door het ziekenhuis en de erfgenamen van Abby.
1972: Linda, een feministe en openlijk lesbische studente, wordt, samen met haar lesbische trawanten, op de campus uit de vrouwengroep gezet: blijkbaar komt de feministische zaak op de eerste plaats. In een poging om hun zorgen te vergeten, gaan de vriendinnen naar de enige lesbische bar in de stad, waar Linda Amy ontmoet, die te "butch" (mannelijk) is om er bij Linda's vriendinnen mee door te kunnen. Linda is, ondanks de afkeuring van haar vriendinnen, geintrigeerd en krijgt meer begrip voor Amy en wordt verliefd op haar, waarbij ze leert over haar eigen vooroordelen.
2000: Fran en Kal wil een kind nemen. Maar ze willen dat het kind alleen van hun is, dus gaan ze naar een spermabank. Maar wat een beslissingen moeten er genomen worden! Bestellen via internet? Welke donor? Welk ras? Welke seksuele voorkeur? En wat te doen als de spermabank geen voorraad heeft van hun perfecte donor. En boven alles, klopt het wel om een kind op de wereld te zetten dat ontegenzeggelijk veroordeeld zal worden? Of zal liefde en humor hen er door slepen?
