Story: The life story of Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld, a German
gay Jewish socialist, who as a physician established the field of sexology, and fought militantly against
German anti-sodomy laws in the late 19th century. In 1897 he started the first gay group
in history. The script reveals main characters in Hirschfeld's life including impossible
love interest Baron von Teschenberg, his young friend Karl Giese and guardian angel, the
transvestite Dörchen, as they establish the First Institute of Sexual Sciences in
Berlin in 1920, and follows their struggles to keep it open, up to the rise of the Third
Reich in the mid 1930s, when the Nazis destroyed his work in 1933.
Verhaal: Het levensverhaal van Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld,
een Duitse, Joodse, homoseksuele socialist, die als arts de sexuologie ontwikkelde, en die
tegen de Duitse anti-sodomie wetten vocht aan het eind van de 19e eeuw. In 1897 startte
hij de eerste groep voor homoseksuelen in de geschiedenis. Het verhaal toont de
belangrijkste personen in het leven van Hirschfeld, waaronder zijn onmogelijke liefde
Baron von Teschenberg, zijn jonge vriend Karl Giese en zijn beschermengel, de travestiet
Dörchen, terwijl zij het eerste instituut voor Seksuele Wetenschappen vestigen in
Berlijn in 1920 en volgt hun gevecht om het open te houden, tot de opkomst van het
Derde Rijk in het midden van de jaren 30 van de vorige eeuw, toen in 1933 de Nazi's zijn
werk vernietigden.
