Story: Late nineteenth century: Nancy Astley, a girl who works in the family oyster restaurant in Whitstable, visits a music hall and falls in love with Kitty Butler, a male impersonator, who hires her as a dresser and takes her to live in London. They become a double act both on and off the stage, but their manager Walter wins Kitty's hand as she ultimately chooses the safety of a traditional life rather than risking the public disapproval of her true feelings for Nancy. Devastated, Nan takes to the streets to survive, in her guise as a male impersonator, and finds a niche in the Victorian sexual underworld. She is also drawn to Florence but feels unable to tell her the truth about her secret street life. Instead, she is spotted by the wealthy widow, Diana Lethaby, a woman in her thirties who lives by her own rules; utterly amoral, acapricious and predatory. She introduces Nan into a world of luxury and debauchery and Nan virtually becomes her sexual slave. When Nan is eventually thrown back on the streets, destitute and starving, she searches for Florence, who is initially deeply mistrustful, but a strong bond develops between them that blossoms into real and lasting love.
Verhaal: Eind 19e eeuw: Nancy Astley, een meisje dat in het oesterrestaurant van haar familie in Whitstable werkt, bezoekt een music hall en wordt verliefd op Kitty Butler, die haar act doet verkleed als man. Kitty neemt Nan als kleedster aan en neemt haar mee als ze in Londen gaat wonen. Daar worden ze zowel op als achter het toneel een koppel, maar hun manager Walter wint Kitty's hand als deze de veiligheid van een traditioneel leven verkiest boven het risico om voor haar ware gevoelens voor Nancy publiekelijk afgekeurd to worden. Nan voelt zich verslagen en gaat zwerven, in haar vermomming van man, en vind een plek in de Victoriaanse seksuele onderwereld. Ze voelt zich ook aangetrokken tot Florence, maar voelt zich niet in staat om deze de waarheid te vertellen over haar geheime leven op straat. In plaats daarvan, wordt ze opgemerkt door de rijke weduwe Diana Lethaby, een vrouw in haar dertiger jaren die volgens haar eigen regels leeft; volkomen amoreel, wispelturig en sex belust. Zij brengt Nan in een wereld van luxe en losbandigheid en Nan wordt praktisch haar seksslavin. Wanneer Nan uiteindelijk weer berooid en hongerend op straat komt te staan, zoekt ze Florence weer op, die haar in eerste instantie erg wantrouwt, maar er ontstaat een sterke band tussen hen die zich ontpopt in echte en blijvende liefde.
