Story: Based on the novel by Evelyn Waugh with the same
name. The series opens in England on the eve of the World War II. Charles Ryder, the
main character and narrator, is an officer in the British Army. He stumbles upon an
English country house, Brideshead Castle, which he has visited more than twenty years
before. Upon seeing the house, Charles begins to tell the story of his years at Oxford,
his meeting Sebastian Flyte and his love for Sebastian's sister Julia.
The first five episodes focus on Charles' relationship with Sebastian, dealing
candidly with homosexual passion. Parts six to eight portray Charles' "dead years," his
ties to the Flyte family apparently severed. His growing love for Julia returns him to
Brideshead. The final three parts follow the development and decline of this relationship
and the death of Lord Marchmain.
Verhaal: Gebaseerd op het boek door Evelyn Waugh met
de zelfde titel. De serie begint in Engeland aan de vooravond van de Tweede Wereldoorlog.
Charles Ryder, de hoofdpersoon en de verteller, is officier in het Britse leger. Hij komt
toevallig terecht in een Engels landhuis, Brideshead Castle, dat hij meer dan twintig jaar
geleden heeft bezocht. Als hij het huis ziet, begint Charles het verhaal van zijn jaren in
Oxford te vertellen; zijn ontmoeting met Sebastian Flyte en zijn liefde voor de zus van
Sebastian, Julia.
De eerste 5 afleveringen concentreren zich op de relatie tussen Charles en Sebastian,
waarbij de homoseksuele aantrekking open wordt weergegeven. Aflevering 6 tot en met 8
laten de "dode jaren" van Charles zien, zijn banden met de Flyte familie lijken verbroken.
Zijn groeiende liefde voor Julia doen hem naar Brideshead terugkeren. De laatste drie
delen volgen de ontwikkeling en het ten einde lopen van zijn relatie en de dood van Lord
Marchmain.
