Story: May 8, 1938. Adolf Hitler visits his Italian
colleague Mussolini. It's a great day for Italy, also for the tired housewife Antonietta
and the radioman Gabriele, who is sacked because of his homosexuality. The fascist husband
of Antonietta has left because he wants to attend the historic event. In the deserted
building where Antonietta en Gabriele live they seek comfort with each other and have a
short affair. The sound of the radio on the background which tells about the nazi
happening makes them seem even more alone.
Original archive footage of Adolf Hitler Benito Mussolini was used in the film. In
1978 the film received a Golden Globe Award for the best foreign language film.
Verhaal: 8 mei 1938. Adolf Hitler gaat op bezoek bij
zijn Italiaanse collega Mussolini. Het is een grote dag voor Italie, ook voor de
vermoeide huisvrouw Antonietta en de vanwege homoseksualiteit ontslagen radioman Gabriele.
De fascistiche echtgenoot van Antonietta is weggegaan om de historische gebeurtenis van
dichtbij mee te maken. In de verlatenheid van hun flatgebouw zoeken Antonietta en
Gabriele troost bij elkaar en beleven een korte verhouding. Het commentaar over de
nazistische gebeurtenis dat steeds op de radio te horen is, versterkt hun eenzaamheid.
In de film zijn orginele archiefbeelden gebruikt van Adolf Hitler en Benito Mussolini.
In 1978 kreeg de film een Golden Globe Award voor de beste film in een buitenlandse taal.
