Story: A lesbian coming-of-age TV series in three episodes, which tells the story of a young girl's escape from a religious upbringing. It is based on the autobiographic novel of the same name by Jeanette Winterson, who also wrote the screenplay. With an upbringing spent learning the bible, praying for "heathens in hot countries", and listening to her mother's favourite radio show, "The Jim Reeves Devotional Selection", Jess unnerves both classmates and teachers when she begins school. When Jess grows up, she meets Melanie, who works at a fish stall and what begins as a simple friendship, soon turns to passion. On discovering the truth about their relationship, her horrified mother and local Pastor believe these "unnatural lusts" to be the work of the devil and decide extreme measures are necessary if she is to be saved.
The series won a BAFTA for Best Drama and Geraldine McEwan got a BAFTA for Best Actress.
Verhaal: Een TV-serie in drie afleveringen over de weg naar volwassenheid van een lesbisch meisje, dat het verhaal verteld van haar ontsnapping uit een religieuze opvoeding. De serie is gebeaseerd op het autobiografische boek met de zelfde naam door Jeanette Winterson, die ook het scenario van de serie heeft geschreven. Door haar opvoeding, waarin ze constant uit de bijbel heeft moeten leren, moest bidden voor de heidenen in warme landen en mpest luisteren naar de favoriete Radioshow van haar moeder "The Jim Reeves Devotional Collection", werkt Jess haar klasgenoten en leraren op school op de zenuwen. Als ze wat ouder is ontmoet Jess Melanie, die in een viskraam werkt, en wat begint als een simpele vriendschap groeit uit tot passie. Als haar geschokte moeder en de plaatselijke dominee achter de waarheid van hun relatie komen, geloven zij dat deze "onnatuurlijke lusten" het werk zijn van de duivel en ze besluiten dat extreme maatregelen nodig zijn om Jess te redden.
De serie won een BAFTA voor de Beste Drama-serie en Geraldine McEwan kreeg een BAFTA als Beste Actrice.
